The film takes place in 1986 and 1998 and is based on a true story about three poor, Black kids in rural Mississippi who reap the consequences of their family's cycle of abuse, addiction, and violence. They independently struggle to escape their circumstances and must decide whether to confront what's plagued their family for generations or succumb to the same crippling fate, forever damned in Mississippi. This film was very good. It is very realistic and shows what goes on in many african american families that grow up in poor communities. This movie takes on the everyday issues endured by black people when they continue to live in old poor communities that people live in and never see the way out and they continue to live within the cycle. One of the themes that I got from this film is that everyone needs a "talented tenth" (-Dr. E.B.Dubois) someone that will make it out of our humdrum cylce of life and make us that are left behind feel that our life is not in vain. Our children's accomplishments help us to feel our life was not wasted.
