A great comment. What can you say about such a movie? You could go on for pages. Great characters. And what is often not remembered is how much of a risk the famous scene with Dafoe was. When Stone put that scene in the film, it was a real risk. The scene needed a film good enough to justify it as drama instead of caricature. It was truly a great risk for a film maker. The film did justify the scene, and we are swept up into the world Stone depicts.
This was groundbreaking. No other war film has ever shown the true suffering of what war really is. The romantics versions are usually the ones put on big screens, but this one was true down to every lost limb and lost mind.
