Really touching movie
In only his second feature, Leonardo DiCaprio turns in such a finely nuanced performance as a mentally retarded 18-year-old, that he had many people convinced that director L***e Hallstrom cast a special-needs child in the role of Arnie, the admiring shadow and complete dependent of older brother, Gilbert (also played remarkably well by Johnny Depp). This is not a film of action. In fact the title character's inertia in supporting a family of outcasts, including his morbidly obese mother, is the spine of a truly meaningful character study that rings true even when it is at its most odd.
