I think this is the casting from Hell! Barnabas Collins was hardly the campy, flamboyant character Depp usually portrays! Another sorry remake of a classic "cult" favorite!!! Ben Cross was a much better choice in the 90's remake of the series...

There is only ONE Barnabas Collins and that was the late, great Jonathan Frid. RIP Jonathan/Barnabas !
Not so much casting from hell but big makeup disaster. The original Barnabas was not all made-up if you know what I mean. And, he was meant to look human as in the original black & white. You can really sympathize with his plight then. He shouldn't look like a freak. I'm disappointed. I was a huge fan too rushing home from school in the late 60s to see it. I'll still go see this version but . . .I hope the plat makes up for the freaky appearance of Depp.

I have to disagree....Depp can do it all..as for Ben Cross as Barnabas in the '90's...it was a shallow comparison to the original...this one is based directly on the original with input from Dan Curtis of DCP the original prducer of the original series.
I still dream about Ben Cross in his role as Barnabas Collins, and that man is like 40 years my senior roflol. I can't help it; he was hott! I think both Cross and the original Barnabas did amazing jobs (although I'm partial to Cross because the remake was in my generation). I am interested to see if Depp can actually get it together and be the stern-faced English Colonist this role demands.
This role will be even more famous for Depp than Captain Jack. Depp adores Barnabus and it is a long-time dream of his. His talent is limitless and he is beyond sexy and beautiful as a vamp should be. I expct goose bumps and constant thrills. I'm 56 and will drag my grandkids and show them what they've been missing with Twilight. ha ha Johnny will knock 'em dead. He'll have a 3rd coiver on People for sure.

Jonathan Frid's Barnabas had depth. Did you watch the series? They did explore much about how he came to be who (what?) he was. He had so many different sides to his personality. Nobody can replace Jonathan. Ben Cross couldn't and Johnny Depp...don't watch anything he is in so it will depend on the rest of the cast for this.
Woops, I see above that you did watch the series. And you think the characters "depth" will be better explored in what will be 90 min to 2 hrs max? Hard to imagine.
I think Depp is a great actor, and he's already said he didn't plan to stray to far from Frid's conception of the character. The only thing I'm worried about is the script. If they try to play up the camp they're going to miss the whole point of making the film.
Dan Curtis was involved with the 90's version. Also he died in 2006 so they must have been talking about this a long time. I heard 2007, that would leave Curtis out of any talks or plans.
Johnny Depp can do anything. Also remember him in Edward Scissorshand
