I was not going to watch this as I heard the rumor that it was nothing but a conservative's way to speak ill of a family I love warts and all. I am a liberal's liberal a Democrat's Democrat. I always will be.
When I decided to watch I was prepared to excoriate it and write a very negative review. I thought it would be partisan, slanted and another attempt at Republican brain washing.
But my preconceptions, in my opinion, were wrong. I love this series and I am hooked into it. It combines a small amount of history with a large amount of personal interactive moments between the players. I have read much about the Kennedys and I have loved ALL of them. I did not care about their sexual appetites or personal flaws. I LOVED and still do love their politics.
This film does makes me LOVE them even more. I believe it makes the stories between them their supporters, their adversaries and the relationships between each other real. I think there is a lot of truth to the series. I do not know for sure because I was not among the Kennedy inner circle but this portrait make me love Jack more, see what he was up against and managed to work though the short tenure of his presidency with great physical pain. I thought it portrayed him as a sensitive man, ethical man despite his marital infidelity who was captured by a very domineering father which I knew Joe Sr. to be.
I thought the actors were simply WONDERFUL -- all of them. And I thought they painted a multi-dimensional portrait of a family married in complexity. I had more sympathy for JFK, RFK and even saw things in Joe that showed a pained man. NO one in this life, no one I KNOW of is either all good or all bad and the Kennedy's are no exception.
What it truly did show me is how difficult it is to run the machinations of this country and how STRONG one must be to even attempt its onslaught. The president is dealing with a country of fractured and split beliefs AND he is dealing with a world beset with life and death issues. He must weave into his own presidency ALL those policies of those who preceded him. It shows how DIFFICULT it is to govern.
I cannot wait for each episode. I think this was one of the BEST in docudrama programming. I do not think conservatives will be happy because it does more to make the Kennedy's human and real like the rest of us who suffered through great triumphs as well as great tragedy which could fell the strongest of us. I say good job you have not changed my mind one bit. The Kennedy's will go down in history as being on the right side of it. I wish the next generation would run. How much do I think we could use a Teddy Kennedy now? My problem with them is that they leave us much too soon and how much better this country would be had JFK and RFK and even JFK Jr. lived out their years!

I like your comments. I do feel that Joe Sr. laid a heavy hand on those boys and it did impact them in a negative way early on. That said, I think they all had strong character and did rise up to meet those challenges.
There is so much hatred out there and you can just read some posts of people who carry this grudge and hatred against the Kennedys, it's very sad how much people "hate" them, and they don't know anything about them. I do too wish that some of them would toss their hat into the ring, but the world is very different and there is a lot of hatred out there. People forget just how much this family has given, and what they personally have lost. Too many people forget that Jack & Bobby had families that loved and needed them. We watched this minieseries because for a brief time, we felt we could reconnect to a different time and hope that the end somehow would be dfferent. That's my two-cents.
