Jon Favreau is right,Mandarin shouldn't be a supernatural villian but,he should still be hard to stop. His rings shouldn't be real yet the highlight should be what tricks he can use:
A.Creating Robo-Mandarins:Mandarin realizes Iron Man has help in the looks of both Black Widow and War Machine and creates his own army of Robo-Mandarins:one shoots lazers from his eyes, while another one shoots fire blasts from his hands.
B.Mandarin can stand up to fire blasts until Iron Man,War Machine or some other tough superhero manages to destroy one of the ten rings and as long as he has on rings, bullets pretty much bounce off him so it seems as though magic, is involved although not fully.
C.Mandarin also has his own human army: asian military soldiers who helped Mandarin get his rings. These soldiers are highly trained in combat and are capable of tackling most of the S.H.I.E.L.D. operations experts(but none of them have battled Black Widow so anything's possible).

Why not supernatural? I think it should remain pretty much to the story of the comic books. But let him have a vulnerability that gets discovered, and they go for that to get him destroyed or sent into the unholy abyss or whatever ;o) That would create that thriller feel to it as well. Think Sherlock Holmes! LOL
