Brother Joseph is an elderly monk and Kingsbridges Priory's physician. His hands shake with palsy and he always causes more harm than good believing, purging' is the cure for all illness. He is
determined to see Mattie sentenced to death for witchcraft after she has opposed Joseph's archaic medical practices.

David’s extensive theatre credits include Moonlight directed by Bijan Sheibani for Donmar Warehouse, No Man’s Land directed by Rupert Goold for The Gate Theatre, Dublin and for which he received an Olivier nomination as Best Actor, Henry 1V, Parts 1 and 2 directed by Nicholas Hytner for the National Theatre and for which he was nominated for an Olivier Award as Best Supporting Actor, Titus Andronicus directed by Bill Alexander for The Royal Shakespeare Company, Twelfth Night and Uncle Vanya both directed by Sam Mendes for Donmar Warehouse.

David earned another Olivier award nomination for Henry IV Part II for the Royal Shakespeare Company. He was the winner of the Clarence Derwent Award for Best Supporting Actor in Hamlet and Henry IV Part II for the Royal Shakespeare Company and he won the coveted Olivier Award for his Best Supporting Actor role in the National Theatre production of King Lear.
