On October 2nd 2017, news of Tom Petty’s sudden death at the age of 66 shocked the nation. As one of America’s most adored singers and songwriters, his career spanned more than four decades. But he was haunted by the fact that his brothers had written most of his songs and he was just riding on their coattails, that he didn’t deserve his fame and success. He battled depression which then led to addictions to alcohol and cocaine which put incredible stress on his heart and he suffered a breakdown early on his career, collapsing during a photo shoot in Amsterdam. Despite his family’s efforts he ended up bankrupt and alone on his brother’s estate in England where only his mother was there to witness his final demise.
