Elton John was born Reginald Kenneth Dwight. He changed his name early in his career, paying homage to two members of his early group Bluesology, Elton Dean and Long John Baldry.

John was knighted in 1998 by Queen Elizabeth II for his charitable work.

Candle in the Wind. The song was originally written about Marilyn Monroe and released in 1986. After the death of Princess Diana, John reworked the song as a tribute for her and it became his biggest song in the U.S.

14 weeks! The song shot to #1 as soon as it was released. It is also the second best-selling single of all time, right behind Bing Crosby's White Christmas.
